The book has been written at a time when cars powered by batteries and hybrid cars are becoming prevalent, and not surprisingly these have an important place in the book as do wind turbines and photovoltaic cells. Thermal generation of electricity is also a major topic in the book, and fuels discussed include biogas made from plant material, biomethane, sugar cane residue (bagasse), landfill gas and spent cooking oil. Hydroelectricity including pumped storage features. Nuclear generation of electricity has a not insignificant place in the book.

He has held academic posts in the UK and Australia and has held visiting posts in a number of countries including Kazakhstan. He has written over 20 books and numerous papers and articles.
